Complete
Curriculum For Teaching Voice-Data-Video
- Why
spend your time researching VDV topics and creating your own curriculum
for your courses when you can use VDV Academy's programs like hundreds
of other instructors around the world? If you are an instructor who
needs to teach a fiber optics or VDV (voice-data-video) cabling course like these or include them in
your current communications classes, VDV Academy offers instructor's
kits just for you. The programs are developed by author and
professional instructor Jim Hayes, author of the textbooks and
developer of the Fiber U and Cable U training programs. Jim has trained
about 10,000 students and hundreds of instructors in the last 25 years.
-
- We
Wrote The Books!
- VDV
Academy instructor's kits are based on our textbooks "The Fiber
Optic Technicians Manual" and "Data, Voice
and Video Cabling" from Thomson Learning. The
programs come with guides to the textbooks, complete annotated
PowerPoint presentation slides, manuals for laboratory hands-on
exercises and a DVD of installation practices - in fact, practically
everything you need to present a class. We even provide equipment lists
for equipping labs. The fiber optic program also includes the best tool
for teaching OTDRs - a PC-based OTDR simulator that allows you to
project the OTDR display for all the class to see (also available
separately.)
-
- Here
are some typical courses
you can teach using VDV Academy curriculum modules.
-
- These
programs are appropriate for teaching cabling as part of an A+, MCSE,
Cisco, The FOA
and SCA certification
course or as a stand alone fiber or wiring course. They can be used in
trade schools, electrical apprenticeship programs, adult education or
professional development programs, technical college or technical high
school course. Fiber optic programs qualify for FOA certification,
both at the basic (CFOT) and advanced (AFOT, CFxT, CFOS specialties)
levels. SCA
certification is available for the structured cabling
(wiring/fiber/wireless) program. Instructors teaching our courses have
also been approved for BICSI CECs and telco FTTH training.

Academy Instructor's Programs Are On CD-ROM and DVD
- Basic
instructor's materials for developing and giving a complete classroom
and hands-on course are provided in electronic format. This allows for
editing to fit your course needs and for printing as needed. Each
program includes the appropriate textbook, student manuals, teacher's
guides, hands-on lab instructions, PowerPoint presentations, homework
and quizzes. A DVD Of Quicktime videos is included on many programs.
- Here's a complete list of
what's on the CD-ROM. Here are some typical courses using these
modules.
- Here
is a sample PowerPoint presentation
(PPT file 2.5 MB) to download that shows how VDV Works PPTs
are set up to make teaching a class much easier.
- We
encourage all instructors to use the "Lennie Lightwave"
and "Uncle Ted"
websites as part of the course. VDV Works "virtual hands-on" online
tutorials there will help your students understand termination and test.
-
-
- Lab
Equipment And Supplies
- Included
in all programs are equipment lists for lab exercises and sources for
lab equipment and supplies at discount prices.

-
- VDV
Academy programs are pre-approved for FOA and SCA certification
training, making it much easier to get your school approved by these
organizations! Many instructors also offer BICSI CEC credits for these
programs.
-
- Fiber
Optics
- The
fiber optics program includes eight separate modules, listed below,
with over 1,000 PPT slides and instructor guides for each session.
Student manuals for classroom and labs are included as appropriate. It
is a very comprehensive program that can lead to FOA CFOT, AFOT, CFxT
and advanced CFOS certifications. The termination, splicing and testing
PPTs can be used during hands-on labs in an extensive basics course
(30-60 hrs) or used for FOA advanced certification courses. A lab
manual covers hands-on exercises and our OTDR simulator is included.
These modules can be edited
and combined to create numerous types
of courses.
-
- Topics
covered by individual modules in the Fiber Optics Program include:
- Basics
of Fiber Optics
- Fiber
Optic Cables
- Fiber
Optic Termination
- Fiber
Optic Splicing
- Fiber
Optic Testing and Troubleshooting
- Fiber
Optic OTDRs (with
OTDR simulator)
- Fiber
Optic Network Design
- Fiber
To The Home
-
- Here
is a sample page from the
Advanced Testing PPT showing the extensive annotation
provided as a guide to both instructors and students.
-
- The
section on OTDRs
(optical time domain reflectometers) is also available separately. It
includes a tutorial, presentation and a unique PC-based
OTDR simulator. This program allows the instructor to run the
OTDR simulator and project it for the whole class, as shown here.
Students may also load the simulator on their PC to analyze files for
homework. Dozens of sample traces show the effects of changing OTDR
settings on the traces and has a wide selection of real-world traces
for student or class analysis.

-
- Structured
Cabling
- The
VDV Structured Cabling course focuses on premises cabling: copper,
fiber and wireless. It includes a basic PPT on structured cabling,
mainly UTP (unshielded twisted pair), since the fiber optic
presentations cover that topic in great detail. The VDV course also
includes a PPT that covers UTP and coax installation and termination
processes in great detail, ideal for showing installation processes in
labs. Lab manuals, instructor's guides and a copy of the textbook "Data, Voice
and Video Cabling" are also included. The VDV
course materials for wiring, wireless and fiber optics can be used to
create a training course for the CTC certification of the Structured Cabling Association.
-
- Topics
covered by individual modules in the Structured Cabling Program include:
- Cabling:
Structured Cabling, Wiring and Fiber Optics
- Wiring
Installation
- Wireless
- Residential
technology
- They
can be combined with the fiber optic modules to teach several styles of
structured cabling
courses for commercial and residential applications.
-
-
- Bonus
Programs
- When
you purchase the complete (fiber and cabling) programs from VDV
Academy, you receive three bonus programs: Fiber To The Home/Premises,
the hottest topic in fiber optics today, and Wireless, an introduction
to wireless communications which shows why "wireless" isn't wireless,
and the latest program, The Tech Home" covers connecting the home to
broadband access and devices in the home to each other and the outside
world.
- A
DVD of Quicktime Videos of installation practices shows industry
experts explaining how it's done. Since it's Quicktime, students can
copy the videos for study and reference.
