VDV Works Virtual Hands-On Training

Cat 3 and Cat 5/5E/6 UTP Termination

We're going to duplicate what you would learn in a hands-on training program by showing you how Cat 3 and Cat 5/5E/6 unshielded twisted pair cable termination is done in detail, step by step. We'll show you how to terminate a Cat 5/5E/6 link through a 110 punchdown block and Cat 3 through a 66 block, since these are the most common applications. We will not cover the Krone or Bix blocks since they are manufacturer-specific and not as common.

When we teach termination we do it step-by-step, having analyzed the process carefully and broken it into a number of small steps. By following these steps, we have been able to achieve almost 100% yield in our training and performance well within the range of Cat 5. So this virtual hands-on course shows you those step by step procedures and gives you precise instructions on how to do it yourself.

Each page in sequence will show you the process. You can go back and forward by using the list on the left hand column or the Next-Back links.

Before you get started, we recommend you read "Uncle Ted's Guide To VDV Cabling", our online guide to the basics of structured cabling. It will introduce you to the jargon and the technology, before you get into the "hands-on" processes here.

Each page in sequence will show you the process. You can go back and forward by using the list on the left hand column or the Next-Back links. Next will take you to the lesson guide when you finish one part of the lesson.

If you want to really do Cat 3 and Cat 5/5E/6 termination yourself, you can acquire the tools, test equipment and consumables we use here and follow along in "reality!"
